My 20 Trees and Me: Growing Up Together

Engaging the next generation in environmental protection is key to the future of our planet.

Over half of Kenya’s population is aged under 18. 20 Million Trees for Kenya’s Forests recognises the importance of involving young people in the project activities. My 20 Trees and Me: Growing up Together is involving primary school children in tree planting from the very start!

Mount Kenya Environmental Conservation (MKEC) have spearheaded a campaign to engage with primary schools around Embu County. Future phases to the campaign will bring in further schools – so that young people living close to the areas we are working in will be actively involved in protecting the trees as they mature.

150 children from 9 primary schools have already planted their 20 trees – bringing the total to 3,000 trees. 

The children will take care of these trees, watering them and tending them with the help of their classmates, teachers and Mount Kenya Environmental Conservation staff members. Every year, each child will be photographed with their tree, to record their own and their trees’ growth. They will join with children in the UK in learning and teaching others about the importance of forest restoration.

The schools participating in My 20 Trees and Me initiative include: St.Marks Rutune primary school, Ac.k Kagumori primary school, Rugumu primary school, Mbuvori primary school, St.Hellena primary and Kathuniri primary school.
