Project Update: Reforestation of Mt. Bamboutos Montane Forest
We received a very encouraging mid-term report from the Mt. Bamboutos Montane Forest Reforestation project which confirms the scheme is making excellent progress.
This project aims to regenerate the degraded Mt. Bamboutos Montane Forest area which has suffered deforestation as a result of over-use by local communities.
The scheme involves a variety of stakeholders including local traditional leaders, administrative and educational authorities. Awareness is raised within these groups of the dangers of deforestation and workshops are held to give practical advice on how agroforestry can help alleviate this issue whilst offering more stable livelihoods.
The reforestation project then establishes seed nurseries where agroforestry tree ‘crops’ can be raised before being planted out and cared for within the local community.
So far the project has already achieved the following:
Ten communities have been sensitised to build awareness of deforestation and support for the livelihoods improvement initiative.
Participatory field assessment of most degraded land/slopes has been conducted.
Three communities have been provided with training and nurseries of 5000 seeds have been established in each community (Nkong, Besali and Mmockbie).
A central nursery for establishment of a seed bank constructed in Upper Lewoh hosting 10000 seeds of Bush pepper, Prunus, Acacia, Leucaena, cola, Canarium, Moringa, and Neem.
Nine school environmental clubs have been created and have received tree planting education and equipment.
Ten sessions of environmental protection lectures have been organised in ten schools and six tree nurseries have been constructed in schools.
This is an exciting initiative that has an opportunity to make a very positive impact on the local forest environment and the livelihoods of those living around Mt. Bamboutos.
