Trees for Life: Changing Lives in Senegal

Our partner – AVED Colibantan – is tackling some of the consequences of poverty, poor management of natural resources and environmental degradation in the Tambacounda region of Senegal.

This new project funded by our Africa Drylands Programme will enhance livelihoods through: raising awareness around natural resource management, training in agroforestry and agroecology methods (including beekeeping), establishing sustainable village nurseries and planting over 8,500 trees.

Trees planted include Acacias, Cashew Nut and fruit trees, and some endangered indigenous species. 

These trees will provide food, fodder and natural fertiliser; encourage beekeeping and help with soil conservation; and some can even be used for medicinal purposes. Community engagement and involvement is essential, and so far there has been enthusiastic commitment from villagers and farmers.

Kalipha Athie from AVED says, “This project supported by ITF is, for many villages and people, a small seed sown in their minds and an initial experience. We are confident that in the future, little by little, populations will engage more and in an increasingly autonomous way with the creation of tree nurseries and reforestation actions.”
